A simple blackjack-like resolution mechanic for anything ranging from intense debate, wizard beam struggles or clashing blades.
Some googling led to me finding other interpretations of this idea, but I haven’t seen this particular combination of rules before, so here goes.

Push To 20
To begin with, determine the stakes: what happens to the winner, what happens to the loser?
Both participants aim to get to a score of 20 without going over.
The first roll is a d10. Each subsequent roll is a d6. If your current score is 17 or higher, you roll a d4, instead.
After each roll, a participant may roll again, or hold.
Exceeding 20 immediately loses. Highest total wins.
On a tie, the combatant who rolled the most dice wins. If that’s still a tie, so is this standoff.
