Today, a bit of worldbuilding through a new Dwarven culture, with the simple idea of “what if we take the nature theme of elves, and give it to dwarves?”
Arbor Dwarves
- Official Name: Sylvanar
- Common Name: Arbor Dwarves
- Derogatory Name: Timberlings
Guardians of the Archtrees
The Sylvanar, commonly known as Arbor Dwarves, have a deep connection to the Archtrees, colossal trees that pierce the skies. These dwarves take on the role of guardians, dedicating their lives to the protection and preservation of these majestic arboreal wonders. They possess an intimate knowledge of the trees’ growth patterns, their ancient wisdom, and the intricate ecosystems that thrive within them.
Divine Woodwork
Unlike their traditional counterparts, the Sylvanar craft their armor and weaponry from the bountiful wood of the Archtrees.
The armor is intricately carved, designed to blend with the forest environment, and provides both protection and mobility.
Their weapons, such as axes and hammers, feature reinforced wooden constructions with metal edges or spikes, combining the strength of metal with the natural beauty and resilience of wood.
It is said that Arbor Dwarves know the secret of keeping the wood that they work with alive, even after it’s been seperated from the Archtrees. This means that their armor and weapons can regenerate slowly over time when damaged.
Appearance
The Sylvanar have adapted to their forested environment, developing dark skin tones that provide camouflage among the shadows of the Archtrees. Their hair, often varying shades of vibrant green, is said to be infused with moss, and is a tiny ecosystem in and of itself.

Place in the World
Arbor Dwarves are more than mere warriors. They act as eco-stewards, ensuring the harmony and well-being of the forest and its inhabitants. They possess vast knowledge of plants, herbs, and the healing properties of various wood species. Their woodworking skills extend beyond armor and weapons to crafting intricate sculptures, furniture, and objects that celebrate the beauty and functionality of wood.
Magic
The Sylvanar harness arboreal magic, allowing them to commune with the spirits of trees, control plant growth, and manipulate the forest environment. They can create barriers of entwined branches, summon roots to restrain foes, or call upon the healing energies of the forest to mend wounds.

Culture
The Sylvanar hold great reverence for wisdom, balance, and the cycle of life. They seek harmony in all aspects of their lives, valuing sustainable practices and the interconnectedness of all living beings. Their society is structured around the teachings of ancient tree spirits, with councils of wise elders guiding their decisions and ensuring the preservation of the Archtrees.
When a Sylvanar dies, they are taken to the roots of the Archtree, where they are entombed. It is said that after some time, the face of the fallen Sylvanar might appear somewhere on the bark of the Archtree. Next of kin will then erect a small shrine around the wooden visage.
Connection to the Outside
Outsiders or individuals with ill intentions might derogatorily refer to them as “Timberlings.” This term attempts to belittle their stature and presence, implying that they are lesser beings or merely sprouts in the vast forest of other races.
